What You Can Do To Keep Your Children From Getting Lice

Posted on

If you're worried that your school-age children will catch head lice, your fears aren't entirely unfounded.  It's estimated that as many as 12 million people are affected by lice on an annual basis, with the majority of those afflicted being children between the ages of 3 and 10 and their families.  However, although the statistics may seem pretty disheartening, there are things you can do to minimize the chances that your child will have to deal with lice.  Use this information to learn two preventative techniques you can start using immediately so lice won't be an issue for your child.

Use Tea Tree Oil

One of the first things you can do to help subvert lice is use tea tree oil.  Pure tea tree oil provides a powerful defense against head lice, and using it may be just the right preventative measure that you've been looking for.

When compared to other essential oils, tea tree oil provides the most protection against head lice.  The important thing to remember is that you want to use one hundred percent pure tea tree oil.  There are a number of blends on the market, so be sure that the product you purchase specifically guarantees that it only contains pure oil that was extracted from the leaves of the tea tree.

While you're washing your child's hair, pour out a quarter-sized amount of shampoo into your hand.  Then, add three drops of the tea tree oil to the shampoo and combine the two products in your hand.  Distribute it throughout your child's hair as normal, and then wash it out.  Repeat the same process with the conditioner.

Teach The Importance Of Not Sharing Headgear

Although you may have spent a good deal of time instructing your child concerning the value of sharing, it may be time to teach them a bit about the opposite approach.  Sharing headgear could be a mistake, since lice can be transmitted by head-to-head contact.

If there is another child who happens to have lice, their hats or scarves could be infested.  If your child then puts on their headgear, your child could become susceptible to catching lice.  Teach your children not to share their headgear and to avoid putting on items that belong to someone else.

Keeping lice at bay doesn't have to be difficult if you know what to do.  Incorporate these practices right away so you can help your child avoid getting head lice. If your child does catch lice, contact a doctor for help with lice removal.
